Solo exhibition Jumaldi Alfi Jakarta

Jumaldi Alfi's Blackboard Paintings, on display in his solo exhibition of the same title at Latar in Jakarta until 13 July, can be read as a critique of history and ‘the perception of history as something done,’ which by the findings of art historian Michal B. Ron in her brilliant essay ‘The Triple Lesson of Jumaldi Alfi's Blackboard Paintings’, the artist challenges on different aesthetic and intellectual levels.

Marco Cassani - Power

Marco Cassani's edition Power (2018) is inspired by The Alphabet of Money, which has been created by the outcast of a Balinese community to give value to the banknotes which he creates and uses as his own fantasized economic system against reality. The graphic work is executed as a silkscreen, printed manually by MUR @screenprintmur, Milano, Italy  with water base ink on Fedrigoni paper Sirio black 260 g, 50 x 70 cm in an edition of 25 and was exhibited by Lucie Fontaine’s new branch in Italy.

C - Marco Cassani

The title of Marco Cassani’s solo exhibition at Honold Fine Art ‘C’ refers to the third letter in the Latin alphabet and introduces abbecedario, (Alphabet Book), a projected monograph, which will analyze Cassani’s artistic practice. Besides Cassani, ‘C’ stands for column, currency, coin and credibility, four words tightly connected by the concept of the creation of value, a red thread in the practice of Cassani, as demonstrate the projects Indisciplinato (Undisciplined) and The Alphabet of Money (Huruf Uang). The exhibition presents an installation comprised of more than six thousand foreign and Indonesian coins, stacked on top of each other to form five individual columns. Each column differs from the others in physical aspects like height, weight and texture as well as the symbolic and economic value it represents.

Fendry Ekel - Entries

is the title of Fendry Ekel’s solo exhibition in Erasmus Huis Jakarta, running from 25 January–16 March, 2018. On the day of the opening the artist’s monograph with the same title was presented in an artist talk with Fendry Ekel, joined by designer Dirk Laucke, head of the Amsterdam/Berlin based graphic design Studio Binger Laucke Siebein and the editor of the book, art historian Astrid Honold, MA. The talk was moderated by art historian Usha Chandradas of PluralArt magazine, Singapore. Both, exhibition and monograph are investigating borders in the broad sense of the word. Borders which not only divide but also constantly address our awareness about entries that can bring people together: a common ground. With the exhibition, Ekel wishes to express that in a prospering society art is not only an efficient tool for cultural diplomacy but also an integer vehicle which helps us remember the essence and beauty of life. With his figurative works Ekel stimulates the viewer in thinking abstractly. The selected works on display, paintings and sculptures, invite the audience to an insight in what seems to be unrelated trivial subjects at first but on further investigation presents a complex network of strong invisible relations. Fendry Ekel was born in Indonesia, brought up in the Netherlands, and has lived in different countries in Europe and the US. Based on this life experience, he developed a great interest in the connections between individuals and societies. As an artist Ekel sheds light on those connections. The exhibition Fendry Ekel – Entries in Erasmus Huis Jakarta is a token of a valuable relationship between countries, Indonesia and the Netherlands.
